Retained swab during evacuation of uterus
Cheryl was 25 when she presented with a missed miscarriage in her third pregnancy. She underwent an Evacuation of Retained Products of Conception in 2008. Following this she developed pelvic pain, and passed a swab 5 days later. She alleged that this was a breach of duty by the doctor who did the operation. PMS Expert Report agreed, as leaving a swab in the vagina was clearly negligent. It did not seem that there were any long term consequences. The case settled, and Cheryl was compensated for her five days of discomfort.
