Expert Witnesses
Pyper Medical Services was founded in 2010 to improve the organisation of medicolegal work, providing better liaison and a faster turnround time in the rapidly expanding field of clinical negligence. Our experts are accredited consultants at the top of their field who are experienced in writing comprehensive, court compliant reports, covering a broad spectrum of areas of expertise.
Richard Pyper has many years’ experience of preparing reports, but as demand from solicitors increased, a more efficient and responsive organisation was created to streamline the service. As the company has grown, we have invested in the latest technology to manage documentation and monitor the flow of work for our clients.
Since 2016, Ruth Mason has been an invaluable member of the team, preparing many reports in Obstetric cases which makes up a growing proportion of our work. We were delighted when Rahila Khan joined Pyper Medical Services in 2021 to offer her expertise in Obstetrics and maternal medicine cases.

How does PMS work?
Pyper Medical Services (PMS) has experience of every aspect of litigation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
When a medical complication or injury occurs, the client seeks advice from a solicitor who in turn asks PMS to produce a report.
PMS have provided more than 850 Breach of Duty and Causation reports on a wide variety of subjects and over 85 Single Joint Expert reports were prepared in the Liverpool Urogynaecology litigation. The Claimant to Defendant ratio is 75%: 25%, although many reports have also been produced for coroner’s inquests, GMC hearings and personal injury.
What kind of reports are available?
Breach of Duty & Causation Report
This provides a full and detailed review of the medical records, to identify any areas in which there was a breach in duty of care and its link to causation of an injury. This report would be CPR compliant and addressed to the court.
Condition & Prognosis Report
The aim is to provide a thorough account of how the alleged breach of duty has affected the individual. This report will usually need the expert to be in contact with the client, whether by telephone, video call or face to face appointment.
Screening Report
This is a brief summary based on a limited review of the notes to indicate whether there is a case to answer. It is written for the benefit of the client and is not court compliant. Answers to follow up questions are not included.
Who should I contact to obtain a price for a report?
Please email pms@pypermedical.co.uk with some details about the case and the type of report that you require.
What other services does PMS provide?
The majority of our work is in clinical negligence, but PMS also produces reports for GMC hearings, Coroner’s inquests and personal injury cases. Our experts attend over 40 medico-legal conferences per year with Solicitors and Barristers and have considerable experience of giving evidence in court. PMS has also conducted research in the literature on recent surgical innovations and product liability for tapes and meshes.
Which expert will cover my report?
Richard Pyper’s expertise is in Gynaecological surgery and Urogynaecology, including tapes and mesh complications.
Ruth Mason specialises in all aspects of Obstetric care, including feto-maternal medicine and ultrasound scanning.
Rahila Khan specialises in all aspects of Obstetrics and has a special interest in maternal medicine and diabetic pregnancy.
How long is the turnaround for reports?
Usually three months for most types of report.
I need a report really quickly. Can that be done?
Please email pms@pypermedical.co.uk with the details of the case and the date that you require the report. Usually we can accommodate fast track reports and will let you know a completion date.
Should I send electronic or hard copy records?
PMS prefers all notes to be provided in electronic format, whether they are emailed, or need to be downloaded from a server or portal. Please contact us if this is not possible. Hard copies may incur extra time and expense.
How can I help speed up the turnaround and reduce costs?
Well organised paginated medical records enable our experts to quickly and easily navigate large volumes of documentation, resulting in cost savings to you. Incomplete and disorganised notes significantly slow the process of report writing, or even stops the process mid-flow, resulting in delays and increased fees.
