Why still hysterectomy?
Over the past years the performance of hysterectomy has gained a somewhat bad press: rather
like the D & C of old, one may well have the feeling that a hysterectomy is advocated without any
real justification and other options, more targeted at the cause of the problem, are not considered.
Leaving cancers aside, hysterectomy remains an excellent option for the treatment of many benign
conditions, including adenomyosis, fibroids and heavy periods, especially when the woman’s family
is complete. However, the indication should be well defined and the operation not performed
because the gynaecologist cannot think of what else to do. Fortunately, minimally invasive
techniques have now been widely adopted and wherever possible a laparoscopic, robotic or
vaginal hysterectomy should be performed as the recovery is hugely shorter and the operation far
less painful.
