Gynaecology / Hysterectomy
Chronic pain following hysterectomy
Winnie was 41 in 2007 when she had a hysterectomy. She subsequently developed chronic post-surgical pain and alleges that she was not warned of this complication beforehand. PMS was asked to assess the case on behalf of the hospital in order to see if it was worth defending. PMS Expert Report concluded that the claim is worth defending, as it is not routine practice to warn patients of the risk of chronic pain, and indeed, it is unlikely that Winnie would not have consented to the hysterectomy had she been warned anyway. The case is ongoing.
